Memories from Apogee/3D Realms #2

I have been a basket case so this one might not go where I want it to... But I am going to give it a shot.

As you might or might not know, I am the Goto guy at apogee. Anything you need you come to me. Most of the time the new guys ask someone something and the answer is always "Just go to Bryan"

The strangest one though took the cake.

This is just after we moved into the new building, not everyone was even unpacked yet. I had finished unpacking and was trying to get adjusted to my new office. (Another story here about one person that is STILL not unpacked) So I am sitting there trying to figure out if everything is where it should be for me to get my stuff done and Rubin comes in.

"Sup Rubin?"

"I need a fly"

I think I just blinked at him for a few minutes trying to figure out what he actually was asking for. I finally came back with "Ummm Alive or dead" Running through all the ways that I could catch a fly in a NEW building.

The response was worse than I could have thought "OH COOL! 2 dead ones and one alive one! I need them for a monster in the game"

So I gave my standard answer. "OK I will figure it out and get back to you"

The rest of the day was spent 1) Hunting for dead flys and 2) figuring out how I could get a live one.

Most of you don't know this. When you come into Apogee/3D Realms you walk through a foyer that has 2 HUGE planters in it and then you walk into the lobby. (Where the Nuke symbol is) So what I decided to do is Make my lunch and sit it in the foyer with the Front door propped open and the Inside doors closed. So while I was sitting out there I started looking around. And in the window seals I came up with 2 dead flys. Out of all the windows and everywhere else in there there was just 2.

I start eating and low and behold I am looking at my food and a Fly lands on it. I kid you not I was so happy to have a Feaking fly on my food it was funny. I put my food down and shut the door thinking that "You might fly but you are NOT going to fly far, Bitch!"

And yes that was a good idea because I spent the next 30 minutes trying to catch this fly with stuff you can find around the office. And I actually did. I think it was A I have given up with ideas on how to catch it and I am just going to grab it.

I go into Rubins office and give him a baggie with 2 dead flys and a pill bottle with the live one. HE was SO Happy. Cut to 2 hours later. The office that now holds the animators used to be the photo studio. I walk in there and this is what I see.

Every light is on. Ruben is in there with his cameras. There are two toothpicks with dead flys superglued to them, and they were superglued to a chair, and then there was the live one in a glass jar with Rubin crouched down taking his picture and then making him fly and taking it again. It was like he had a famous model in there and he knew this was his only chance to get the right photo.

That monster was never in the game. And the pics of the flys are long gone. But Rubin was a very interesting person to work with that is for sure.

Oh and AFAIK the fly was not harmed. But I really dont know cause after that I went home. My life is normal when I get home. I needed home.

haha, that sounds insane. i don't think anyone would expect to have to hunt flies within a game company.

that story is o funny xD, if somone asked me for flies I would be stopped in time looking at the person for a while as well xD, anyways, it's late now, since this was years ago xD, but if you want to catch a fly, all you have to do is let it land still, make your hand like a shell, your hand must be slightly above the fly slowly, and then be VERY FAST, swoop your hand above the fly, about 7cm (I'd say about and inch) above the place where the fly is standing, also, don't forget to close your hand xD, if you feel something moving inside your hand, then you've got it, if not, try again :P.

takes some time to master, I learned this from a friend of mine on a boring afternoon and there was an unusal amount of flies flying around...

additional tip, do it from the front of the fly.
This way you can lower the hand a bit.
Flys cant start "reverse" they always fly a bit to the front during takeoff
