Triad About a fictional mod for D3D based on ROTT
Hi, it's my first post in 3d realms forums. I always DN3D since I bought this game when I had 12 years. Some months later, I discovered BUILD and started to create my own maps, but I was never as good as some excellent map or mod makers because I don't have enough patience, time and also creativity to make mods or good maps. One more thing: In that epoch I still hadn't Internet, so I had to learn myself on how to create maps in BUILD. I'm much better now, but I still lack good creativity and mainly planning.

But I also always Rise of the Triad. In fact, my uncle gave me the CD of this classic game. And to me, in that epoch, the graphics were amazing. El Oscuro was really a crazy and mad guy that created a crazy cult/religion in excuse to kill millions of people! But for me the most striking and difficult boss is the NME that fire heat seaking missiles. Even in easy difficult is hard! Oh my God! And when I defeated such machine in the first time, I was still having my first experience in playing a real time 3d game and never won the game yet. But this is past, because I won ROTT some time later and uncountable times. Now I prefer to create my own maps or play an add-on, like Extreme version.

I want to know if anyone here is thinking about to create a TC for Duke Nukem 3d based on Rise of the Triad. I'm questioning this because i'm not experienced in making mods for games.

What I want to say about this fictional mod is:

1) Giving Rise of the Triad name to this mod may be illegal, so maybe Return of El Oscuro, Oscuro War, Oscuro/Oscurido Empire, Return Of The Triad, Fall of the Triad or something else...

2) A combination of Rise of the Triad graphics with BUILD engine. Or better, instead of using the original low res graphics, which may be illegal, it would be better to create higher resolutions of all ROTT textures, or at least slightly different textures from the original! And I know that someone is starting to make hi res textures. I saw in ROTT forum.

3) The playable character would be Taradino Cassat. But I know that someone created a mod called Naferia in which you can choose the chracters. So, based in Naferia mod, in this mod you could choose the 5 chracters of the original game, each one with its own properties. Maybe plus Duke Nukem and Max Payne chracters to help the Task Force Team to defeat El Oscuro forgotten descendent...

4) In this TC, everything must be related to Rott, like textures, enemies, weapons, music... everything. Except for some things, like pushwalls and some other factors because it will be using BUILD engine. About the Ankh life points in Rott, they could be used as medkit or as some type of special ammo for magical weapons.

5) About the story of this TC (the story may be long but interesting):

After destroying "all" El Oscuro eggs and his huge castle, Taradino Cassat and his team returned to their normal activities. But not all eggs were destroyed, because in a well secret, secure and huge biochemistry laboratory under the castle, there was a last and forgotten egg that developed very fast, and a clone of El Oscuro borned. But such egg was different from the others, because it was a special one and the most well made egg. So the borned clone is the strongest mutant version of El Oscuro, many times more powerful than it's father or creator.

The original El oscuro, because of it's powers, is a mutant. The nazis created him long time ago to through him dominate the world. But the project failed and Oscuro became too dangerous and escaped to unknown place. Through his lifetime he convinced many people to build with him a giant and isolated castle in an island in the middle of the Pacific using his mental powers. When Oscuro became adult, he decided to dominate the world making his own mutant clones to spread over the world. But he needed the help of Darian and Krist to do this. To create and develop clones inside eggs.

El Oscuro and maybe other bosses, except NME were crazy scientists that took many years to finally create such eggs using Oscuro DNA. They invented them to create uncountable mutant clones of El Oscuro to control them to dominate each country of the world! But the eggs alone would not be enough.

To convince people, they had to invent a crazy cult/religion and a huge monastery inside the castle. To do this, they had to spread advertisements over the world about such Oscurido cult that would promisse the immediate salvation of the soul. This cult used the Ankh symbol to represent the eternal life and salvation after death (That's why the game is full of such symbols in its levels, as a form to do brainwash in people that live in that castle).

After convincing many people, El Oscuro, General Darian and Sebastian Krist formed the cult and gave some power to them (the oscuridos, "death monks"). El Oscuro promissed people that they would receive more power if they helped him to dominate the world. They accepted because for them, El Oscuro was almost as good to them as Jesus!!! And with all this belief he brainwashed people. Later, the oscuridos themselves said to the guardians of the castle that one day Oscuro would also give powers to them if they protected well the castle.

Oscuro, Darian and Krist had the idea to create the NME, the ultimate guardian of the castle! The triad symbol means the relationship with Oscuro, Darian and Krist, because each one came from their own company and formed a triad, the rise of the triad.

But now, the new powerful Oscuro Demon built a bigger castle in another isolated place (maybe this time in a big desert, like Saara), created the cult again, but this time he convinced so much people that this cult is now a very known and feared bad religion that brainwash people very easily. Many people think that the new Oscuro is the reincarnation of Hitler himself, but now with powers. The world is in danger again!!!

So in this fictional TC, the Task Force had to return to battle to defeat Oscuro again, but this time, with the help of Duke Nukem and maybe Max Payne to help them in specific strategies.


Note: All the story I created is both alternate story of Rise of the Triad and the fictional TC I have in mind. Maybe if anyone is thinking to create Rott 2 or just a TC based on it, this may help a lot to give any ideas based on the game.

I saw in a forum a discussion about ROTT 2, but looks like that nobody will make a new ROTT game. Maybe doing a Total Conversion for Duke3d or a more recent game, like Unreal or Half-life may work!

I need opinions, suggestions and maybe even more ideas about all these ideas.

I'm sorry but all that post is for nothing. 3DR doesn't like their games to be remade, on ANY engine. Ridiculous I know, but that's the way it is.

It is not necessarily to make an exactly copy of the game, but to do something or to put some things to make something similar to that game. What I'm only suggesting is about the idea to make a mod related to Rise of the Triad for dn3d, but as a sequel, not a new game. It's just an experimental idea.

Its not doable. 3DR won't alloy it.

- You can't use original art work from the game.
- You can't use original sounds or music from the game.
- You can't call it Rise of the Triad.
- You can't use characters from Rise of the Triad.

They dont let people "port" from one game to another, at all.

You can't use the art or sounds, but there's probably not a problem with using characters from or based on what's in the Doom Bible.

And nothing is stopping anyone from creating all sorts of awesome missile weapons that remind you of ROTT in Duke3D.

I only did this topic because there are some people that are doing higher resolution of textures and a GL port for ROTT, even models. So because of such innovative ideas to make the game a better look, I had the idea of a fictional mod for dn3d or for any other game based in ROTT to make a better version of that game, a more "realistic one". And also for my own reason: I always dreamed with a modern sequel to the game with today graphics. They are doing with Duke3d, did with Doom and Wolf3d and why not ROTT?

Maybe a sequel for ROTT would be good, because the game itself was very creative from my point of view, and certainly for many other people too. I also read somewhere about a petition to make ROTT 2. I think Joe Siegler created that and is the only person worried about the game. But he is not alone!

Such mod would be much different from ROTT, because the enemies, bosses, levels, weapons, music, HUD and even playable chracters could be slighly different from the original ones. The mod would also lack some things unique to ROTT, like pushwalls, jump pads, scores and combat modes. The name of the mod would be different from the original game, obviously. Even El Oscuro could have a slightly different name and texture to appear more dangerous. Conclusion: the mod itself would be different from ROTT, but it is only a sequel and would have things vaguely related to ROTT, like the Ankh and a different triad symbol.

Ok, I understand that making a mod or TC about games from 3DR is not allowed, but a mod of ROTT for dn3d would really be cool and entertaining, because it would use a better engine, you know. And don't worry because I don't have experience to create good mods, so I'm simply not capable to do amazing things like this!

If anyone here wants a sequel to the game, please post in this topic to see your opinions. It's the great oportunity!

But as you pointed out they're already upgrading ROTTS graphics. If you want to help, help those guys with textures, sounds, sprites and models

I also had this mod idea because ROTT engine is too old and limited, that's almost wolf3d engine. That's why I prefer a mod that is at least vaguely related to ROTT, using at least BUILD engine.
